No pause in Munen is longer than ten seconds, in any zone, at any intensity. That is a hard cap in the code, and it is there because the evidence says a longer wait does not buy proportionally better behavior. What changes behavior is being asked the question and being able to say no. The wait is only what makes the question land.
Longer delays do buy something, though: frustration, and then deletion. This page lays out the research that set the number.
What the friction research actually found
Three findings shaped the cap.
A short interruption is enough to stop a third of opens. Grüning, Riedel and Lorenz-Spreen studied the app one sec in a field experiment with 280 participants over six weeks, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in 2023. On average, participants closed the target app again 36 percent of the times the intervention appeared. By week six they were attempting to open target apps 37 percent less than in week one. The intervention combined a deliberation message, a short wait, and an easy way to dismiss.
Friction beats a timed lockout, and people accept it more. The InteractOut study, presented at CHI in 2024, tested subtle input manipulations against the conventional timed lockout in a five week field experiment with 42 participants. Compared with the lockout, it cut usage time by a further 15.6 percent and opens by 16.5 percent, with a 25.3 percent higher acceptance rate and less reported frustration.
Restriction produces resistance. Psychological reactance, the effect Brehm described, is the tendency to push back against a perceived loss of freedom by wanting the restricted thing more. A screen time app that takes the choice away is a machine for producing it. Self-determination theory points the same direction: motivation that lasts is internalized, not imposed.
Put together, those give a design rule. Make the person decide, make it cheap to decide either way, and do not spend the user's patience on a countdown that adds nothing.
What Munen does with that
The delay by zone, on the default balanced intensity, tops out at ten seconds in the hardest zone and falls to zero in the best one.

Notice that the three intensities barely differ at the top. Firm is not a longer wait than balanced in zone 1. Both are ten seconds, because ten seconds is the ceiling for everyone.
So where does the difference between a hard day and an easy one live, if not in the wait? In the access window. That is the number that actually varies.

Ten seconds against fifteen is a difference you feel as annoyance. Three minutes against fifteen is a difference you feel as a decision. The second one is where the engine does its work.
What the pause screen says
The wait is not a blank countdown. The screen shows two things you wrote yourself in a calm moment: your own reason for wanting to use the phone less, and one of the alternatives you listed.
This is the deliberation prompt from the research, not decoration. In the PNAS study it was the combination of message, brief friction and easy dismissal that produced the effect. A timer alone is just a toll.
Why the hardest zone is not a wall by default
In the lowest zone, an un-configured user gets a ten second pause and a three minute window, not a locked phone. A wall is available, but you have to choose it yourself, ahead of time, in what the app calls the hard day contract.
The reasoning is the reactance finding above. For an audience that is already dealing with burnout, procrastination or low mood, a zero-recourse wall on their worst day is the most likely thing in the product to get the app deleted. So the default on your hardest day is a longer pause and a small deliberate escape, and firm mode is an opt-in commitment device.

Can I make the pause longer? No. Ten seconds is the ceiling across all intensities. You can make the access window shorter, which is the lever that actually changes your day.
Can I make it shorter? Yes. Gentle intensity tops out at eight seconds, and zone 5 is zero seconds in every intensity.
