Munen vs ScreenZen: a pause you configure or a pause that follows you

How Munen and ScreenZen differ: delays, open limits and strict blocks you set per app, or a pause and access window that follow your daily zone.

ScreenZen and Munen both put a countdown between your thumb and the app it reaches for. Both have a free plan and both use Apple's Screen Time framework on iPhone. The difference is who writes the rules. ScreenZen gives you a toolbox of delays, limits and blocks and lets you configure each app. Munen has one mechanic, and your recent behavior tunes it. This page lays both out so you can pick the one that matches how you actually fail with your phone.

The short version

  • ScreenZen configures. Per app you set a delay before it opens (and can make it grow with every open of the day), a daily time limit, a limit on opens, a cooldown after a session, scheduled blocks and custom prompts. Strict blocks and a lock mode stop you from undoing your own rules.
  • Munen paces. When you open a flagged app it shows a pause of 0 to 10 seconds and then gives you a limited access window of a few minutes. Both values depend on a zone that is recalculated every night from how you used those apps the day before. Munen names the five zones from Pause (hardest day) to Flow (best day).

If you want full control of every knob and a way to lock yourself out, ScreenZen is built for that. If you want a single pace that follows your week without you managing rules, that is what Munen does.

Core mechanicAdaptive friction: a pause of 0 to 10 seconds plus an access window of a few minutes every time you open a flagged appDelay before the app opens, with optional daily limits, open limits, cooldowns and scheduled blocks
What decides the pauseYour zone, recalculated nightly from your usage of the flagged apps. You pick the overall intensity (gentle, balanced, firm) and a hard-day modeYou, per app. The wait can increase each time you open the app during the day
Reacts to your weekYes. A day where you were slipping gets a longer pause and less access the next day; a good day gets a lighter one. Moves one zone per day, never mid-dayNo. Escalation resets with the day; rules stay as you set them
After you get inAccess window of a few minutes, then the pause returns. Balanced intensity: 4 to 10 minutes depending on zoneSession length you set, then a cooldown or a daily limit you set
Complete blockNot by default. Optional firm hard-day mode closes flagged apps on your worst days, and you turn it on yourselfYes. Strict blocks by time range, by number of opens or by screen time; lock mode makes limits harder to bypass and protects against uninstalling
Daily recoveryIf you are in one of the two lowest zones and have had a genuine effort day by 8 pm, Munen lifts you one zone for the evening and keeps that floor the next morningNot applicable
The pause screenYour own reason for using the phone less and one of the alternatives you chose (read, message someone you love, breathe)Countdown with a custom message you write, for example "what are you seeking?"

Where each one fits

You like tuning rules. Ten seconds on Instagram, thirty on TikTok, five opens a day on Reddit, a hard block from 9 to 12. ScreenZen exposes every one of those knobs per app. Munen deliberately does not: you pick an intensity and a hard-day mode, and the zone does the rest.

You do not want to manage rules. Configured limits tend to drift: too strict on a good week, too loose on a bad one, and you end up editing them mid-scroll. Munen's zone reads yesterday overnight and adjusts the pause and the window for today. You can still step in and change your zone or your intensity when you want to.

You need to lock yourself out. ScreenZen's strict blocks and lock mode are designed so you cannot undo a rule in the moment. Munen keeps the app reachable by default; the firm hard-day mode is the only wall, and you choose it.

You want zero cost. ScreenZen is fully free and funded by tips. Munen's adaptive engine, zones, focus sessions, journal and a weekly taste of the AI are free for up to 3 apps; unlimited apps and generous AI are Premium.

You want someone to talk to at 11 pm. Munen's AI coach knows your week's numbers and the SOS screen walks you through the urge. ScreenZen gives you the countdown, your own message and a streak.

Frequently asked

Can I use both? Technically yes, since both use Screen Time shields, but two pauses on the same app stack up. Pick one mechanic per app.

Does ScreenZen adapt to my behavior? Within a day, yes: the wait can grow with each open. Across days, no: rules reset and stay as you set them. Munen's zone carries the day's signal into the next day, one step at a time.

Does Munen ever block completely? Not by default. In the lowest zone the default is a short pause and a 3-minute window. The optional firm hard-day mode closes flagged apps on your worst days, and you have to choose it.

Which one is cheaper? ScreenZen. It has no paid tier. Munen is free for up to 3 apps and its Premium is 39.99 USD/year after a 14-day trial.

How does this compare to a blocker like Opal? ScreenZen can act like a blocker when you use its strict modes; Munen never does by default. See Munen vs Opal and Munen vs one sec.

Munen is free on the App Store. The friction engine and zones do not require an account or a subscription.
