Munen vs Opal: two different ways to handle screen time

A side-by-side look at how Munen and Opal approach distracting apps: hard focus sessions vs adaptive friction, pricing, platforms and privacy.

Disclosure: this page is written by the maker of Munen. Opal details come from its public App Store listing and website as of September 10, 2026. If anything is out of date, email support@munen.app and it will be corrected.

Opal and Munen both use Apple's Screen Time framework to put something between you and the apps you open on autopilot. They solve the same problem with different mechanics. This page lays those mechanics out so you can pick the one that matches how you actually fail with your phone.

The short version

  • Opal blocks. You schedule focus sessions, choose how strict they are, and during a session the selected apps are closed to you. Outside sessions, the phone is normal.
  • Munen slows. The selected apps stay reachable, but opening one goes through a short pause (up to 10 seconds) and a limited access window. How long the pause is, and how many minutes you get, depends on a zone that is recalculated every night from how you actually used those apps the day before. Munen names the five zones from Pause (hardest day) to Flow (best day).

If you want a wall for specific hours of the day, Opal is built for that. If you want the resistance to track your recent behavior without locking you out, that is what Munen does.

Core mechanicAdaptive friction: a pause of 0 to 10 seconds plus an access window of a few minutes every time you open a flagged appScheduled focus sessions that block selected apps
How strictness is setMostly automatically, from a zone updated once a day based on your usage of the apps you flagged. You pick the overall intensity (gentle, balanced, firm) and a hard-day mode, and you can adjust your zone yourself (once a day free, every 4 hours on Premium)Manually, per session (normal, timeout, deep focus)
Can you get in during a block or pause?Yes, after the pause, for a limited number of minutes. The only exception is the optional firm hard-day mode, which you turn on yourselfDepends on the session mode; deep focus is designed so you cannot
What it measuresOnly the apps you marked as distracting: time in them, late-night use, how often you open them, long sessions. Productivity apps do not affect your zoneTotal screen time, with a focus score and app usage stats
Bad day handlingZone moves at most one step per day; downward moves only happen at the nightly recalculation, never mid-dayNo automatic adjustment; you decide session length and strictness

Where each one fits

You have a clear window you need protected. Work block from 9 to 12, no phone after 10 pm. Opal's scheduled sessions map directly onto that. Munen's focus mode can do a schedule too, but the rest of Munen is not built around fixed windows.

Your problem is the reflex, not the hour. You open Instagram forty times a day and each time it "just happened". Munen's pause targets the reflex itself, and because the zone follows your usage, a good week loosens the pause and a bad week tightens it. You can still step in and adjust the zone or the intensity when you want to.

You have uninstalled blockers before. Hard blocks work until the day you really want in, and that day the app usually gets deleted. Munen is designed on the opposite premise: you can get in, it just costs a pause and a few minutes, and the cost adjusts to your track record. If you do want a wall on your worst days, the firm hard-day mode is there, but you have to choose it.

You want the numbers. Opal reports total screen time, focus score and how you rank against others. Munen's dashboard is narrower on purpose: it tracks the apps you flagged, your zone history, and the minutes you handed back early ("Your reclaimed life").

You care where the data goes. Munen keeps usage data and the zone calculation on the phone. Only the AI features send what you write and a summary of your week to a model, and only when you use them. Opal's leaderboards and cross-device stats require your data on their side.

Frequently asked

Can I use both? Technically yes, since both use Screen Time shields, but two shields on the same app get confusing fast. Pick one mechanic per app.

Does Munen ever block completely? Not by default. In the lowest zone the default is a short pause and a 3-minute window. There is an optional firm hard-day mode that closes flagged apps on your worst days, and it is opt-in only.

Is Munen just one sec with extra steps? No. one sec asks for a breath before you open an app, at the same intensity every time, and needs a Shortcuts automation per app. Munen's pause length and access minutes change with your zone, and you pick apps once. A Munen vs one sec page is coming.

Which one is cheaper? Munen's adaptive friction, zones, focus sessions and journal are free, with a weekly taste of the AI. Its Premium tier is 39.99 USD/year after a 14-day trial. Opal's yearly plan is 99.99 USD as of September 2026.
