In Munen, minutes you spend in your flagged apps between 22:00 and 07:00 count more than any other signal. They carry 32 percent of the daily zone score, and 30 minutes of night use on its own drops your zone by one step. That means a late scroll does not just cost you sleep. It also sets a longer pause and a shorter access window on your phone tomorrow.
Most screen time apps treat a minute at 2 in the morning exactly like a minute at 2 in the afternoon. Munen does not, and this page explains what it does instead, with the real numbers from the engine.
What counts as night use
Night use is measured only on the apps you flagged as distracting. Work email at midnight does not register. Instagram at midnight does.

Two things are worth pulling out of that table.
The first is the floor. Five minutes of night use registers as zero severity. Checking a message before you sleep is not treated as a failure, because it is not one.
The second is the double effect at 30 minutes. At that point the signal is already at full severity inside the weighted score, and a separate explicit rule fires that subtracts a zone on top. This is deliberate. A night heavy day should not be able to average itself out against a calm afternoon.
Why night use carries the most weight
Munen weights night use highest because it has the strongest evidence behind it of the five signals the engine reads.
The National Sleep Foundation's 2024 consensus statement on screen use and sleep health concluded that screen use in the hour before bed is associated with worse sleep, and recommends avoiding it. The mechanisms researchers describe are three: sleep displacement, meaning the time simply replaces sleep; psychophysiological arousal, meaning the content itself wakes you up; and melatonin suppression from light exposure.
All three matter for a screen time app, but the first two are the ones a friction engine can actually act on. A night filter changes the light. Only a pause changes whether you open the app at all.
The tomorrow effect follows from that. A short night produces a worse next day, and a worse next day produces more reflexive phone use. Munen reads the night, then raises the resistance the following morning, before the bad day compounds.
How the pause changes the next day
Munen names its five zones from Pause, the hardest day, to Flow, the best. On the default balanced intensity the zone sets two values.

So a night where you spend 40 minutes in Instagram after 22:00 lands you a zone lower the following morning. Concretely, that can be the difference between opening the app instantly with a 10 minute window and waiting 5 seconds for a 6 minute one.
The change is always at most one zone per day, and a downward move only ever happens at the nightly recalculation. Munen never tightens the pause in the middle of your day. That rule is covered in more detail in what a screen time app should do on your worst day.
Common questions
Does Munen block my phone at night? No. There is no night block by default. The night window is a measurement window, not a restriction window. If you want apps actually closed in the evening, you set that up yourself as a focus schedule.
What if I work nights? The window is fixed at 22:00 to 07:00 and is not currently configurable. If your schedule is inverted, the night signal will read your normal working evening as night use, and your zone will run lower than it should. Munen is a poor fit for that case today.
Does reading or a podcast at night count? Only if you flagged that app as distracting. The whole zone score is built on the apps you chose, not on total screen time.
Can I see the number? Yes. The zone explanation in the app names the signal that moved your zone, and night use appears there by name when it is the dominant one.
How is this different from Screen Time's Downtime? Downtime is a schedule you set and can dismiss. The night signal is a measurement that feeds tomorrow's resistance. Nothing is blocked at night, and nothing is dismissed, because there is nothing to dismiss.
The short version
Late night use of your distracting apps is the heaviest input Munen has. Five minutes is free. Thirty minutes costs you a zone. And the cost is paid tomorrow morning, as a longer pause and a shorter window, not as a lecture at midnight.
